Cardboard and paper
Most boxes produced at Jarnes are made of cardboard and then covered with paper. Below you can read a little about how we use cardboard and paper as raw materials in our production.
Cardboard
Cardboard is one of our primary raw materials for the production of boxes, and therefore forms the basis for many of our packaging solutions. One characteristic of cardboard is that the higher the grammage and the thicker the cardboard, the stiffer and more rigid the cardboard becomes. Cardboard thickness is typically chosen according to what the packaging will contain and suggest. For example, it is important to choose a thick cardboard box for a package that will contain a heavier object to be sure that the package can carry the contents.
At Jarnes we typically work in the following cardboard thicknesses:
0.9 mm., 1.2 mm., 1.5 mm. and 2.0 mm.

It is possible to get cardboard in different colours. On a piece of cardboard, we typically work with a coloured side and a grey side, as one side of the cardboard is coated with paper. The coloured side of the cardboard will form the inside of the box. The most commonly used cardboard colours are black/grey and white/grey.

Paper
Paper is made up of fibres from trees, which form the starch and strength of the paper. We use paper to cover our boxes. It gives the boxes a nice and stylish look.
There are many different types of paper. The choice of paper depends on the customer's packaging requirements, including design, use and other factors, such as whether the paper is FSC-approved.

Paper can be ordered in different qualities, depending on whether the boxes are to have a glossy, matt, smooth or rough surface, and whether the paper is to be printed afterwards or is a through-coloured paper.

Paper is also produced in different thicknesses. At Jarnes, we typically work with paper with a grammage of between 100 - 140 g/per m2. We do this so that it is possible for us to coat the boxes. We cover our boxes with paper both by machine and by hand.
